Reds take 2 of 3 vs Cubbies

8/22 - Crosley Field
Reds 7, Cubs 5
Rick Reuschel vs Mario Soto
'Twas a hitters day over in Redland.  Big Daddy and Mario Soto fought hard to keep the big digits off the board.  Neither starter had a say in the decision, even though Soto left the game up by 1 run.  Chicago tied it up with a 2 out clout by Jody Davis off of one of the nasty boys, Norm Charlton.  Cincy immediately tied it up in the bottom of the frame with a pinch hit homer by "Doggie", Tony Perez off of Lee Smith.  Vada Pinson singled with 2 outs and touched home plate 3 pitches later after stealing second.  Pinson was plated by a 2 run shot by "Little Joe" Morgan for the walk off win.

8/23 - Wrigley Field
Reds 10, Cubs 1
Jose Rijo vs Greg Maddux
The series shifted to the "friendly confines" of Wrigley Field.  The Cubs were generous hosts today allowing the Big Red Machine to score early and often.  Rijo pitched well into the 9th to get his third win of the campaign.  It was smooth sailing for him thanks to the 9 run buffer his offense afforded him.  Frank Robinson hit his 5th homer of the season and recorded 3 RBI's.  Johnny Bench hit his 7th while going 3 for 5 with 2 RBI.  Chicago managed just 4 hits on the day, which equals the number of pitchers that their manager Jim Walden was forced to use.  Starter Greg Maddux barely escaped the third inning before his day was done.

8/24 - Wrigley Field
Cubs 8, Reds 7
Gary Nolan vs Ken Holtzman
"Root, root, root for the Cubbies, for it's a shame if they don't win...", so says Harry Carry during the 7th inning stretch.  It was almost a shame in fact that the Cubbies had a chance to get swept with 2 games being played in Wrigley.  Down 7-6 and heading into the 9th it sure looked like they were going to go down to defeat.  with "Nasty Boy" Rob Dibble on the mound to close it out the Cubbies had 3 outs to tie it.  "Dibbs" blew away lead off hitter Ryne Sandberg to record out number one.  Ernie Banks singled to right to get things going and Billy Williams almost ended it with one mighty swing that drove Eric Davis back to the ivy for a near miss homer.  That should have been the tell tale sign that Dibbs was done.  Instead he got to face one more batter, Andre "the Hawk" Dawson, who hit one that cleared the bleachers and wound up in the middle of Waveland Avenue for a walk off 8-7 win.
