8/18 - Ebbets Field
GAME 1 - Dodgers 5, Mets 0
Jon Matlack vs Sandy Koufax
Let's make this short and sweet...The Dodgers scored 5 run and Sandy Koufax struck out 16 en route to a 3 hit shutout. Nothing more needs to be said.
8/19-8/20 - Shea Stadium
GAME 2 - Dodgers 6, Mets 2 (10 inn)
Orel Hershiser vs Tom Seaver
The Franchise, who is having a horrendous start to this season, was forced to nurse a 2-1 lead until the 8th when HoJo butchered a grounder to third, which allowed Jackie Robinson to score to tie the game at 2-2. Seaver was running out of gas, but he still started the 10th inning and that was a big mistake. Campy worked out a lead off walk and moved to second on a single by Pee Wee Reese. Jackie bunted the runners up 90 feet, so Maury Wills was given an intentional pass. Steve Garvey plated the go ahead run with a sac fly to left and Duke Snider blew the game open with a 3 run shot off of reliever Tug McGraw. New York's two runs came via a Keith Hernandez round tripper, which until the 8th looked to be the difference maker.
GAME 3 - Dodgers 5, Mets 3 (13 inn)
Don Sutton vs David Cone
Coney and Sutton dueled to a draw and handed the ball off to the pen with the game tied at 2-2. Duke Snider's RBI single off Roger McDowell in the 10th looked to be the game winning run, but Kevin McReynolds’ 2 out homer off of Jim Brewer extended the game 3 more innings. New York eventually met (all puns intended) its fate in the top of the 13th when Don Newcombe singled home Reggie Smith and Gil Hodges. Newk, who's bat is purely lethal was in his second inning of relief. Having a "long man" like Newk is a luxury most staffs can only dream about. Ray Sadecki gave up the runs and took the loss as the Dodgers took out the brooms and swept the Amazin's.
