Bucs stop Friars

Aug 25 – Bruce Hurst vs. Dock Ellis
Pirates score 3 in the 3rd on an RBI single by Dave Parker and a 2-run single by Willie Stargell to take a 3-1 lead.  The Padres tie it in the 4th on an error, then consecutive hits by Bruce Hurst, Gene Richards, and Tony Gwynn.  Bottom of the 6th, Manny Sanguillen homers to put the Bucs up 4-3.  The Padres threatened in the 8th when they got two on with two out, but Dave Giusti got Gene Richards to ground out to end the threat.  Giusti then pitched a perfect 9th for the save and a 4-3 Pirates’ win.

Aug 26 – Randy Jones vs. Bob Friend
San Diego jumped to a 3-0 lead with back-to-back solo HR by Nate Colbert and Benito Santiago in the 2nd, and a Colbert sac fly in the 3rd.  Dave Parker’s HR in the 3rd made it 3-1, and they tied it in the 4th on PH Donn Clendenon’s 2-run single.  Bottom of the 6th, Randy Jones ran out of gas.  Five singles and a walk scored three runs and gave the Bucs’ a 6-3 lead.  In the 7th, Juan Eichelberger came on and was left in to take one for the team.  Over two innings Eichelberg walked 6 batters, gave up 6 hits, and was tagged for 9 runs, and the Pirates finished the day with a 15-3 win.  Dave Parker finished with 4 RBI for Pittsburgh.

Aug 27 – Vern Law vs. Steve Arlin
Steve Arlin didn’t have it, and then was left in until literally his arm was injured and he had to leave the game.  At this point is was 13-0 and the game was over.  The clubs finished the game, 21-2 Pittsburgh.  Law went all 9 for the Pirates.
