‘Stros take 2 of 3 from Redbirds…Andujar tosses No-No in series finale

Game 1
Cesar_Cedeno Overtime baseball was needed in Houston as the game was tied at 2 through 9 innings. Nolan Ryan allowed only a run scoring GDP to Ozzie Smith and a Sac Fly to Stan Musial in his 7 innings of work. Nellie Briles struck out 7 in his start for the No Decision. In the bottom of the 11th with 2 men out, Cesar Cedeno hit a 404 ft. shot to center in the Astrodome for his team leading 10th Home Run. Astros win in a walk-off 3-2. Dave Smith (1-0, 1.84) gets the win for Houston. Lindy McDaniel is hung with the loss.
Game 2
In his first start of the season Astros pinch hitter extraordinaireRusty_Staub Rusty Staub goes 4-4. Houston 3rd string demotee catcher Cliff Johnson hits 2 Home Runs in his first two ABs to pile up 4 RBI. St. Louis starter Larry Jackson was roughed up early. Later in the 6th inning so was Astro starter Joe Niekro. His kuckler stopped dancing and hit after hit led to a 6-run Cardinal inning. Keith Hernandez had a key 2-run pinch hit to send Joe to the showers. With the score 8-6, Steve Brecheen for the Cardinals, Don Wilson and Jim Ray for Houston all pitched shutout baseball, which was all it took for the 8-6 Astro Win. Niekro improves to 3-2, Jackson falls to 2-1.

Joaquin_Andujar Joaquin Andujar
starts game 2 of the double header in Houston, giving Bob Gibson an chance to rest. Andujar proceeds to pitch a NO-HITTER against the Astros. Busch Stadium was cheering wildly as his teammates carried him off in their arms after an uneventful 9th inning with three ground outs. 1 Walk and 1 error were the only blemish on the Cardinal right hander's amazing performance. There wasn't a ball hit hard all afternoon. Andujar goes down in KOD-lore and etches his name into the elite list as the ninth no-hitter pitched in KOD history. Cardinals win 10-0. In a overshadowed sidenote, Tim McCarver and Ken Boyer each hit 2 home runs to attest for most of the St. Louis runs.
