Chicago Cubs play 3 with the San Diego Padres
Let's thank Bruce Thomas for subbing for Joey and managing the Padres. Bruce went above and beyond as he got up early to play. We played 4:00 AM his time(He lives in Poland). So thank,s Bruce.

Rick Reuschel  W (1-1) vs Randy Jones L (1-3)

Attendance: 18,981

Bruce_Sutter After a scoreless 1st inning, Hank Sauer hit his 8th HR of the year in the Cubs 2nd to give them a 1 run lead. "Big Daddy" cruised through the first 6 innings before Sand Diego could mount a threat. With a 2-0 lead Reuschel gave up a walk and 2 singles as San Diego plated a run. Chicago answered in the top of the 8th as Ernie Banks and Ryne Sandberg lead off with back to back singles. Andre Dawson drew a walk. Ron Santo grounded into a double play that scored Sandberg. In the 8th for Sand Diego, Jim Walden, who had Bruce Sutter warming in the pen, had decided that if Reuschel allowed a man to reach first, then it would be Sutter's to lose or save. With 2 out in the 8th, Reuschel gave up a single and immediately got yanked. Sutter got his 6th save of the year.

In the first game of a double header, Greg Maddux won hisGreg_Maddux first game of the year and it was the Ernie Banks show on the offensive side for Chicago. The Cubs got going early as Ernie Banks led off the game for Chicago by depositing one in the left field bleachers. It was number 10 for Ernie. Chicago would go on to score 2 more runs in the inning to take an early 3-0 lead. Maddux would scatter 4 hits during his 8.2 innings of work. Lee Smith would get his 2nd save of the year as he would close the game by striking out Cito Gaston. Ernie Banks added his 11th home run of the year in the 7th. Chicago would be looking to sweep the series in the night cap.

Game 3    SAN DIEGO  3  CHICAGO 11
Ed Whitson L (1-3)  vs Keny Holtzman W (2-2)
Wrigley Field, Time 3:37,  67ø, Light Rain
Attendance: 33,649

Hank_Sauer San Diego would get on the board first as Dave Winfield would hit a two out double to score Carmelo Martinez. It would be 1-0 San Diego. It would be the long ball by the Cubs over the course of the game that would do in the Padres. Hank Sauer would hit his 9th in the 6th. Ryne Sandberg would smack 2, one in the 3rd and another in the 5th. Rick Monday would match Sandberg with 2 of his own as he hit one in the 3rd and another in the 6th. Holtzman would go 7 innings for the win and Scott Sanderson would pitch the last 2 innings for the Cubs. Dave Winfiled would hit 2 of his own, both solo shots to pace San Diego. Although the Padres would collect 11 hits they never were really in this one and Chicago would have the night cap as well as the series sweep.
