Imagine having Mickey Mantle, Reggie Jackson and Rickey Henderson in the same outfield ? Or how about having a pitching staff with Tom Seaver, Dwight Gooden, Jerry Koosman and Ron Darling ? With the 5 year greats league the possibilities are endless. What we did was take only guys who had 5 or more consecutive years with a franchise. Then we took a 5 year slice and averaged it out. You'd be surprised how competitive these teams look ! Lets take a look at the average season numbers for some superstars:
Mickey Mantle: .316-40-98
Willie Mays: .308-45-118
Duke Snider: .312-41-117
Tom Seaver: 21-10, 2.35
Bob Gibson: 20-10, 2.30
Warren Spahn: 21-12, 2.99
Those numbers are pretty representative and not inflated. Those look like legitimate numbers they might have posted in the prime of their careers. That was the best part about this project. Even Mantle might have had a "stinker" year (1959) in his 5 year stretch.
Certainly no "one year wonders" here !!!
